Your Metabolism Doesn’t Change, You Do!

paper-covered-desk[1]

This is probably the most popular conversation I have on a daily basis.  When most people realize I am an Independent Beachbody Coach they then ask what program I did, and/or how much weight I have lost. Once I began talking to them, they usually direct the conversation to how their metabolism has slowed down because they are older. What people do not realize is that they naturally want to blame their metabolism for the change, instead of themselves.

The TRUTH? It is YOUR FAULT!

Now before you go and get all offended, hear me out. Previously, my metabolism did slow down, and more than likely so has yours. However, the reason is the fact that WE MADE IT SLOW DOWN! When we were kids we used to eat non-stop. We were always chasing food. Most people say it is because we have high metabolisms when we are younger, and this is true, but the why will surprise you. In our youth, we did not have the distractions and responsibilities we have now. So back then, life was simple, it was one-dimensional. I am hungry, I should eat. Now, we put our bodies on the back burner. We wake up, often skip breakfast, MAYBE have a healthy lunch if we have time, then have a large dinner because we are so hungry. That is the worst thing you can do to yourself. When are you most effective at work? Are you most effective when you are getting little things done all day long, or when you have one huge project at the last minute. Your metabolism is a lot like work.

Think about this. You work a 9-5 job. You get to work and DO NOTHING ALL DAY LONG because, well, there is no work. Then at 4:45, 15 minutes before work ends, your boss comes in and gives you your ENTIRE workload at that time. How likely will you be able to get your work done for tomorrow? Most likely, not. Your body is the same way, and every day you are creating more work for your body that it can’t take care of in time. You need to feed yourself smaller meals through out the day, constantly. This is what determines your metabolism. If you don’t keep your body working, it slows down. If you keep it working, it kicks it self into gear and works hard!

My metabolism now is just like it was when I was a kid. I feel like I am always eating, but that is because I listen to my body. Now just because I am always eating, doesn’t mean I am eating anything I want. You still need to make healthy choices as well. First and foremost you need to be drinking enough water. I actually wrote about that in another article, “How Much Water Should I Drink?“. Not only do I talk about how much, I tell you why you should be drinking water, AND the benefits. If you are drinking a sufficient amount of water, and listening to your body, you will become a fat burning machine. So, there is the truth about your metabolism. Stay tuned for my next post about what, how, and why to eat a certain way.
